The full answer
A full-time CMO is a permanent executive who works only for your company. A fractional CMO provides the same kind of senior leadership part time, on a retainer. The right choice depends on how much marketing work you have, what you can spend, and how fast you need help.
What does a full-time CMO cost?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a figure for chief marketing officers. Its closest category, marketing managers, had a median annual wage of $166,790 in May 2025. A CMO usually earns more than a marketing manager, and private salary surveys put CMO pay higher still, but those figures differ widely between sources, so we do not quote one as fact.
What is safe to say is that a full-time CMO is very likely a six-figure salary before benefits, bonuses, recruiting costs, and the team and tools they need to be effective. That is why we use "$200k+ a year before benefits" as a planning anchor, not a measured statistic.
What does a fractional CMO cost?
A fraction of that. Published market ranges vary by scope; see our full breakdown in how much does a fractional CMO cost. Ours is Advisor at $4,999 a month and Embedded at $9,999 a month.
Side by side
| Fractional CMO | Full-time CMO | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on your business | Part time, in regular blocks | Full time, embedded in daily decisions |
| Cost shape | Monthly retainer, no benefits or equity | Salary, benefits, bonus, recruiting, often a team |
| Speed to start | Weeks | A search that can take months |
| Commitment | Short initial term, then flexible | Permanent hire |
| Context | Learns your business through briefings and reviews | Absorbs it by being in the room |
| Best when | You need senior judgment but not a full-time executive | Marketing is central and you can fund a leader and a team |
When is a full-time CMO the better choice?
When marketing is central to how the company wins, when you spend enough on marketing and have enough people to keep an executive fully busy, and when you need someone present in every daily decision. A fractional CMO learns your business through briefings and reviews rather than by sitting in the room, which is a real trade-off.
When is a fractional CMO the better choice?
When you need senior judgment now, you have a small team or a few vendors, and the budget or workload does not justify a full-time executive. Many trade and home-service businesses are exactly here: past the point of guessing, not yet at the point of a six-figure hire.
Can a fractional CMO turn into a full-time one?
Sometimes. A common path is to start fractional to build the plan and the systems, then convert to a full-time hire once marketing spend and the team have grown. The roadmap and documentation the fractional CMO leaves behind make that handoff easier. With us you keep everything built.
A decision checklist
- Is marketing the main way we win customers, or one of several?
- Do we have enough marketing work and budget to keep an executive busy every week?
- Do we already have a team for a CMO to lead?
- Do we need someone in every daily conversation, or mainly at the planning and review points?
- How soon do we need senior help: this month or after a search?
If the answers lean toward limited work, a small team, and a need to start soon, fractional usually fits. If they lean toward constant, central, team-heavy marketing work, a full-time hire is worth considering.
Common questions
How much cheaper is fractional?
It depends on scope. Compare what you receive. A retainer for part time senior leadership costs far less than a full executive package, but it also delivers less time.
How fast can a fractional CMO start?
Often within a few weeks, because there is no hiring search. Ours begins with a strategy call and a written 90-day plan.
Will a fractional CMO understand my business?
Good ones learn it quickly through a structured audit and regular check-ins, and they work best when you give them access to your numbers and accounts.
Can I have both?
Rarely at once. A full-time CMO usually replaces the fractional one.
What is the risk of fractional?
Divided attention. Ask how much access you get, how fast they reply, and what they will ship each week.
