How to get your local business recommended by ChatGPT
To get a local business recommended by ChatGPT, make sure accurate, specific, trusted information about it exists in places the assistant reads: a complete Google listing, consistent business details, answer-first pages on your own site, real reviews, and sources it can cite. There is no switch to flip and no guarantee, but each step improves the odds.
Step 1: see what it says today
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google. Ask what your buyers would ask: "who is the best [trade] in [city]", "how much does [service] cost in [city]", "do I need a permit for [project] in [city]". Save the answers with the date. This is your baseline, and it shows who you are competing with.
Step 2: finish your Google Business Profile
Fill in every field: categories, services, service area, hours, photos, and a clear description. Keep the business name, phone, and website exact. Google's local data feeds much of what assistants and maps show.
Step 3: make your details identical everywhere
Use the same name, phone, and description on your site, Google listing, Facebook, LinkedIn, and directories. Conflicting details make it harder for any system to be confident about who you are.
Step 4: write answer-first pages
For each real question, publish a page that answers it in the first two sentences, then adds specifics: numbers, steps, local rules, and exceptions. Plain language beats jargon. This is the single most useful thing you can do on your own site, and it is what Ascend writes for clients.
Step 5: cite real sources
Link the city permit page, the manufacturer specification, or the law you are describing. Content with sources is easier to trust and to quote, and a 2023 academic study reported that adding citations and statistics helped content appear in generative answers.
Step 6: earn real reviews and mentions
Ask happy customers for Google reviews. Get listed in legitimate directories. Answer questions in local forums and subreddits when you can genuinely help. Never buy reviews. Fake reviews carry real penalties and erode trust.
Step 7: check Bing too, and re-test monthly
One analysis reported that ChatGPT's web search results overlap heavily with Bing's top results, so make sure your site is indexed in Bing as well as Google. Then repeat Step 1 every month. Assistants change, and the only way to know is to look.
What to expect
Some changes show up within weeks. Others take longer. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot is guessing. If you would rather have it done, Ascend does the audit, fixes, and monitoring and shows before and after screenshots. To understand the concepts behind it, read what GEO and AEO are.
What an answer-first page looks like
Here is the pattern, using a pergola builder as an example. The page title is a real question: "Do I need a permit for a pergola in Prosper?" The first two sentences answer it: "Yes. The Town of Prosper requires a permit for pergolas, patio covers, and arbors, attached or freestanding, and sealed plans for larger attached covers and for metal structures. Confirm details with Prosper Building Inspections." Everything after that adds depth: the thresholds, who pulls the permit, how long it takes, what it costs, and a link to the Town's own page. The answer is short, specific, sourced, and local. That is the shape assistants find easy to quote.
Common mistakes
- Publishing one generic page and swapping the city name for fifty cities.
- Burying the answer under a long introduction.
- Making claims without a source or a number.
- Letting your business name, phone, or hours differ between sites.
- Buying reviews or links. It is risky and it can backfire.
- Checking once and never again. Answers change.
Common questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not directly. Assistants build answers from information they find, so the way to improve your odds is to make accurate, specific, trusted information about your business easy to find.
What is the first thing I should do?
Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask, in your city, and save the answers. Then complete your Google Business Profile.
Do reviews matter?
Yes. Real reviews support your credibility in local results and in answers. Never buy or fake them.
How long does it take?
Some changes appear in weeks, others take longer. Re-check monthly.
Do I need a website?
Yes. Specific answer pages on your own site are the most controllable thing you have.
Should I write one page per city?
Only for cities where you have real work and real local detail. Pages that swap a city name and keep everything else the same are thin, and assistants learn to ignore them.
